Obdorsk fortress, viewing point

The first settlement on the site of today's Salekhard appeared in 1595 when a wooden fortress of Russian pioneers was established near the Polui River, which later became known as Obdorsk on ancient maps. Until the 18th century, the Obdorsk fortress was used to control local trade routes and protect the monarch's servicemen against hostile raids. The modern historical complex is a reconstruction of a wooden fortress of the 16th — 17th centuries.
